Alphabet spent so much on AI data centers that its free cash flow went negative. This surprised people who own stocks. Those people are called investors.
The shock here is that building things costs money. Google told everyone it would spend more money this year. The stock dropped. Amazon reports Thursday. Meta reports Wednesday. Microsoft already reported but investors are still mad about it.
Free cash flow is what you have left after you pay for stuff. Alphabet paid for so much stuff that the number went below zero. Wall Street analysts—people paid six figures to add and subtract—did not see this coming despite Google saying for months it would spend historic amounts on infrastructure.
The cloud business grows slower at Amazon and Microsoft than it does at Google. This means their capital spending will somehow make investors even angrier. The logic works like this: if the fastest-growing guy is hemorrhaging cash, the slow guys must be lighting money on fire in a dumpster behind the Nasdaq.
Retail traders are now doing what they do best. Panicking. Checking their Robinhood accounts every four minutes. Googling "is negative free cash flow bad" at 2 a.m. Reading headlines about capital expenditure forecasts and nodding like they know what forecasts are.
Here is what happens next. Amazon will say it spent billions on AWS. Meta will say it spent billions on AI that nobody uses. Microsoft will remind everyone it already reported and the stock will drop anyway. Investors will act surprised that tech companies spend money on technology.
The entire sell-off is based on the premise that spending money today might not make you richer tomorrow. This is somehow a new concept in 2026. Every MBA in America learned about capital expenditures in year one. They all forgot by year two.
The funniest part is that Google's revenue still grew. The company still prints money. It just spends more money printing the money. But free cash flow went negative for one quarter so clearly the sky is falling and your index fund is worthless.
