President Hands Out Participation Trophies to Billionaires

Trump gave medals to Elon Musk, Michael Dell, Satya Nadella, and other tech executives at a science summit Thursday. The President of the United States stood in a room and pinned shiny objects to men worth a combined half-trillion dollars. They smiled for cameras. Everyone clapped.

Musk already owns a rocket company, a car company, a brain chip company, and a social media platform he uses to post frog memes at 3am. He needed a medal. Dell sells computers to corporations that immediately fill them with spyware and motivational screensavers. Critical work. Nadella runs Microsoft, a company that convinced every office worker on Earth they need seventeen subscriptions to use Excel. Heroic stuff.

The ceremony honored contributions to American science and innovation. You know what actual scientists get for contributions to science? Adjunct professor salaries and a chance to teach freshmen chemistry at 8am. These guys get medals from the President because they figured out how to charge monthly fees for software that used to cost forty bucks.

Retail traders saw the headline and immediately started buying calls on whatever company makes medals. Spoiler: there is no publicly traded medal company. They bought coins instead. Silver squeezed for six minutes. Someone on Reddit called it a movement.

The summit happened Thursday. The stock market was open. Every executive in that room had access to material nonpublic information about their own companies. But sure, they took the afternoon off to accept awards for innovation. Real innovators were in labs working. These guys were getting pinned like they just finished Boy Scouts.

The medals don't do anything. They don't grant tax breaks or government contracts or the ability to merge with competitors. They sit in a drawer next to cufflinks nobody wears. But they got the photo op, and that's the only thing that trades after hours.
