Trump Discovers You Can't Fire People Who Work For Someone Else

Trump wants to fire three Federal Reserve governors. The courts will tell him no. Retail traders will spend six months panic-selling every time he tweets about it anyway.

Jerome Powell already survived one Trump firing threat. He responded by doing absolutely nothing different. The man has the emotional range of a park bench. Lisa Cook and Michael Barr will presumably adopt the same strategy: show up to work, ignore the noise, watch their job security get litigated by people who bill $1,400 an hour.

The legal issue is simple. The Federal Reserve Act doesn't let presidents fire governors for policy disagreements. It requires cause. Actual cause. Not Twitter cause. Trump could argue they're incompetent, but that sets a precedent every future president would use to staff the Fed like a campaign office. The courts know this. They'll block it. Then we get appeals. Then counter-appeals. Then some procedural motion that takes nine months. By then Trump will have moved on to threatening the head of the Postal Service or whatever.

None of this matters to your charts. The Fed's policy path won't change whether Powell stays or gets replaced by some guy Trump met at Mar-a-Lago who promised him negative interest rates. The dot plot doesn't care about personnel drama. Rate cuts happen when inflation data allows it. Rate hikes happen when it doesn't. The governor nameplate on the door is irrelevant.

But retail will trade this like it's the Cuban Missile Crisis. Every legal filing will spawn a new theory. Every appeals court ruling will trigger stop-loss cascades. Someone will create a "Fed Governor Removal Probability Tracker" and charge $49 a month for access. People will pay for it.

Trump's legal team will bill millions arguing he can fire people he can't fire, the Fed governors will keep their jobs, and your neighbor who bought puts based on a Truth Social post will explain how this was actually bullish for his portfolio.
