Janeese Lewis George won the D.C. Democratic primary. She is a democratic socialist. She is headed for the mayor's office.
Muriel Bowser, who opted against a fourth term, exits stage left.
Trump has already responded. He said he'd consider moving to "take back Washington, run it on a federal basis." That's a threat to end home rule, delivered the way most men order lunch.
Consider the logistics. The federal government already lives in D.C. It already owns the monuments, the Guard deployment, and the good parking. Now it wants the mayor's office too. That's not a takeover. That's a landlord getting mad at a tenant for voting.
Lewis George called the threat an attack on democracy. Trump called her a "crazy socialist." Both sides are being very mature about it.
The press compares her to Zohran Mamdani. Naturally. Every democratic socialist in America now gets introduced as "the next Zohran," like a tribute band with a campaign office. A DSA chapter chair even said voters at the doors keep saying "Oh, DSA, like Zohran."
Retail traders will now pivot to "D.C. real estate plays." They'll buy a Navy Yard condo ETF off a TikTok. They'll hold it through a federal takeover, a Guard deployment, and a ranked-choice voting rollout. They'll call it conviction.
My chart says nothing. It never says anything about this. Support held. Resistance is a mayor.
Her primary opponent, Kenyan McDuffie, warned that electing her would make it easier for Trump to justify federal intervention. He lost by double digits. D.C. heard the warning and voted anyway, which is the most bullish thing a city has ever done against its own interest.
Trump says he can run the city. Congress can't pass a budget on time. The mayor of D.C. can't get a pothole filled by March. Yet here we are, two sides fighting for the right to be blamed for the Metro.
Wall Street will analyze this for nine weeks. Then it will forget it and go back to arguing about a Fed governor's tie.
Washington finally elected someone Trump can't fire, and he's already drafting the paperwork to try.
